N8 Camera Test Outside

Let's start right at the 'easy' end - a photo of a brightly coloured scene in mid morning sunlight. Click the photo below to enlarge it or to download the full 12 megapixel original:

It's an unambitious photo, but still worth analysing. The N8, unsurprisingly, nails this photo perfectly, from the light and shade to the details and colours, even to the colour of the sky.

One thing that intrigued many people, including me, was whether the photo quality would suffer at all in the move to 12mp from the 8mp in the N86. Given identical lens and sensor sizes, I'd say that was likely, but the N8's sensor is 30% or so bigger than that in the N86, which should nicely compensate for the increase in megapixels - and keep the pixel density similar.

To check results, in line with my chosen detail-centric methodology(!), I took the same scene on the N86 and then blew up a central detail (the side of the truck) by a factor of about 10, so that we can see differences with the naked eye:

The N86's version is on the left, the N8's on the right. Aside from the differences in scale and angle, look at the extra consistency and detail in the N8 image: the sunken bolts to the left of the guard on the left side of the crop show the difference most clearly - on the N86 version, they're almost smudges - on the N8 version, you can make out exactly what they are. In addition, look at the mirror-ball hemispherical trim on the right - the N86 version is over-gaudy and way over-sharpened, while the N8 version shows the trim more or less as the naked eye sees it, up close.

In short, very impressive. Remember that I'm not just comparing the N8's stills camera to any old 5 megapixel HTC or budget Nokia unit - I just compared its results to the previous imaging pinnacle in the Symbian world - and the N8 bested it with ease.

Let's take something more challenging - same light conditions, but wide range in subject distance and masses of greenery - traditionally a big failing of Nokia's JPG encoding algorithms. Here's the raw photo from the N8 - again, click to enlarge or download:

Let's pick out a detail that's interesting - say, the ducks standing on the beam. As with the example above, I took the same scene on the N86 and then blew up this detail (the left hand duck), so that we can see differences more easily:

Again, the N86's version is on the left, the N8's on the right. Aside from the differences in scale and angle, the N86's edge enhancement is very evident - almost every camera in every phone does this, to create images which look like they have more detail than is actually there in real life. The N8 photo, on the other hand, shows no sharpening at all. At first glance the N8 version looks worse as a result, but look again and you should be able to appreciate that you're seeing the detail that's actually there rather than what has been put in camera algorithms.

And again I'll emphasise both that I'm using extreme blow-ups here to make my point and that the N86 was previously top dog in the Symbian camera phone world, not some no-hoper drafted in to make the N8 look good.

Talking of extreme close-ups, let's zoom in on a smaller detail in the image - the bench beyond the pond - this is a tiny portion of the photo and will expose the raw pixels:

The difference in detail between the N86 image (admittedly this device has a wider angle lens than the N8, but even so.....) and the N8 image is striking. On the left, you can just about make out that the object is a bench. On the right, you can clearly see the individual slats that make up the bench's back.

Nokia C6. Today Nokia introduced the Nokia C6, a mid-range touchscreen smartphone, with a slide out QWERTY keyboard and comprehensive social messaging software suite. The C6 runs Symbian^1 (but with pervasive kinetic scrolling and widget homescreen, N97-style) and features a 5 megapixel camera, integrated GPS and comprehensive connectivity options. It ships with a full range of Ovi services, including Ovi Maps (free car and pedestrian navigation), Ovi Store (content downloads), Ovi Music (music store), and Nokia Messaging (email and instant messaging). The Nokia C6 will be available later this quarter at a price of EUR 220 before taxes and subsidies. Read on for more.

At first glance, the design of the C6 outwardly resembles the popular Nokia 5800 in shape and size (113.4 x 53 x 16.8 mm [80cc] versus 111 x 51.7 x 15.5 mm [83 cc] for the 5800). However, the horizontal slider form factor, which adds a full QWERTY keyboard and accompanying D-pad, and weight (150g versus 109g) puts the phone firmly into the hybrid category and demonstrates there has been a significant reworking of the internal design.

The software running on the phone is in line with the Nokia N97 and N97 mini. It features the same WRT-widget based homescreen, kinetic scrolling and full range of Ovi services. In common with the E5, also announced today, Nokia are emphasising the social messaging capabilities of the phone, with Nokia Messaging handling a comprehensive range of email accounts, with various on-board tools for interacting with social networks and with Ovi Store giving access to a range of IM applications.

At €220, the C6 offers excellent value for money. The price can be compared to the Nokia 5800's launch price of €279 and the N97 mini's launch price of €450. It should have a SIM-free UK street price of approximately £220, or subsidised on Pay As You Go from about £150 and free on £20/month contracts.

Preview of new Ovi Store client for the Nokia N8

During its N8 developer event, which took place in London yesterday, Nokia demonstrated some of the key features of their upcoming Symbian^3 handset. This included, for the first time on a real device, a preview of the new Ovi Store client. The new Ovi Store client is written in Qt, which offers a significant performance improvement over earlier WRT-based incarnations, and has been redesigned to make it more attractive and easier to use. Read on for some exclusive images and preview comments.

The version I saw running on the N8 was described as a preview, aimed at giving developers an idea of what the new Ovi Store client would look like. As such, it was not the finished article and, like the rest of the N8's software, is a work in progress. The new client will ship with the N8 when it launches later this quarter.

The most obvious change in the client is the thorough overhaul of the design, which has been lightened and simplified, with flatter and more consistent navigation. It benefits greatly from Symbian^3's single tap 'paradigm', which makes the client slicker and more intuitive in use.

In terms of pure functionality, there are no major changes, although the new client will be the building block for the introduction of features such as application updates, subscription and in-application billing, which will arrive in due course.

When you first open up the client, you see the same recommended list of content as before. There are now six items on the screen at any one time, up from five, and a reorganised navigation bar at the top of the screen: Ovi Store (home), Categories (browse by content type), Search, and Account (account details). At the bottom, the left softkey is labelled 'Store menu' (replacing Options), which pops up an overlay menu window (see below), one of Symbian^3's standard UI widgets. The right softkey is used for navigation 'Back' where applicable.

On the home page of the store, beneath the recommended content list, there are links to each of the content sections, which should encourage novice users to browse the store for additional content, rather than solely sticking to recommended lists. It is also notable that Nokia has made an obvious distinction between the labelling of free content (green box) and paid content (price listed).

In the current client, the various types of content in the Ovi Store are accessed via the carousel tabs along the top of the screen. The new client switches to a listing approach, which is more consistent and intuitive. Again, this should encourage casual browsing of the Ovi Store.

In another logical move, 'Channels' (curated sets of content), previously hidden away under an Options menu, have been renamed 'Collections' and placed below the category (types) list.

Tapping on one the content types opens a category list, which is headed by a 'See all Applications' link. Each of these opens up the relevant list of content. Compared to the previous client, this make categories (Business, City Guides, Entertainment, Music...) much more prominent. Previously, categories were little used as they could only be accessed via the Options menu. This should help improve discovery in the store as it will be easier for users to get to listings of specific content areas.

Opening up a specific category brings up the familiar content list, headed by sorting links (top free, best sellers, new).

The individual content item screen has been redesigned, with a more prominent download link, shortened descriptions (full description available via expanding link), expanding reviews section and a re-arranged screenshot area.

Navigation around the store is aided by the 'Store menu', which replaces the 'Options' on the left softkey. It's accessible, instantly, from anywhere within the Ovi Store client and offers links to the 'Store home' (home page), 'Categories', 'Search', 'Account', 'Help' and 'Exit Ovi Store'.

As we mentioned in the introduction, we were told that the new Ovi Store client is written in Qt. This should make it easier for Nokia to develop and add new features to the client, but the biggest improvement is in performance. There's a definite increase in overall speed, but it also gets round the limitations imposed by the WRT environment (e.g. sometimes not recognising screen taps and rendering bottlenecks). Moreover, it should make it easier for Nokia to implement new Ovi Store features, which may require deeper integration with the phone than would have been possible in WRT. It's also a good illustration of Nokia's firm commitment to Qt.

Incidentally, WRT performances issues should largely go away with the next release of the browser and accompanying WRT engine (both based on QtWebKit). However, the new version is not expected to be available before the N8 is launched.

It's not really possible to draw any definite conclusions about the impact of the new client at this point in time. However, based on what we saw, both in terms of the redesign and performance and usability improvements given by Qt, we would expect the new Ovi Store client to significantly increase download and usage rates.

Nokia release Nokia C series and X series. Finnish mobile handset maker Nokia today said it would roll out two new phone series — Nokia X and Nokia C — within this quarter in India to widen its portfolio.

"We are going to launch two new phone series — Nokia X and Nokia C — within the current quarter in the country," Nokia India regional general manager Chandan Dang told reporters in Chandigarh today.

Refusing to divulge details, Dang said these series would represent mid- and high-end handsets with prices starting from Rs5,000.

At present, the company is selling mobile phones in the country under two series — Nokia N and Nokia E.

Nokia N is made for high-end customers while Nokia E is for professionals.

Apart from this, the company plans to launch new mobile handsets fitted with the Linux-based Maemo software in the country in the next two to three months.

It would be a high-performance mobile computer with processor.

Meanwhile, the company today launched four new affordable mobile phones — Nokia 2690, Nokia 1800, Nokia 1616, and Nokia 1280 — for entry-level consumers.

"Our four new products launched today not only have relevant innovation in features that address challenges around power, climate, and language from a mobile context, but also serve as the first gateway to the internet for our entry segment consumers," Dang said.

The prices of these handsets start from Rs1,200 to Rs2,749, he said.

"There is a huge potential for entry-level mobile handsets in the country as this segment contributes over 50% of the total handset market in the country," he said.

Stage installation after downloading all the above applications:
1. Extract the Garmin Xt to a PC hard drive, the result will look like below:

I. Enabling Maemo Extras

1. On the phone goto Menu (clicking the top left of the screen, one or two times) then click More and then App. Manager.

2. Click on the title bar to bring up the menu and click on Applications Catalog and wait for them to load.

3. Scroll down and you will see one called Maemo Extras, click it then uncheck the Disabled setting at the bottom and click Save.

3b. If Maemo Extras is not there then add it manually by clicking New then entering the following information in the appropriate fields:

Catalog name: Maemo Extras
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras/
Distribution: fremantle
Components: free non-free

4. You now have access to the apps from the Maemo Community on Maemo.org :)

Nokia E71 and E66 get Ovi Maps free navigation

Nokia today announced the availability of Ovi Maps 3.3 (3.03) for the Nokia E71 and E66. The updated version brings the free worldwide pedestrian and car navigation edition of Ovi Maps to these devices. Nokia says the release is a result of listening to consumer feedback: 'you spoke, we listened', says the press release. The E71 and E66 versions do not include the Lonely Planet guides due to technical constraints, but the core navigation offering is the same as that found on more recent devices.

The process of making the latest version of Ovi Maps available for existing devices is quite involved, but the team managed to include complete navigation functionality. Due to technical constraints in back porting the app to existing devices, unfortunately, it wasn’t possible to offer further premium content such as the Michelin and Lonely Planet guides.

The announcement is a follow on from January 21st, when Nokia announced that Ovi Maps was going free.

In the press release, Nokia note that the E71 and E66 will be "the last of our S60 3.1 and older devices to sport this version of Ovi Maps". This means we will not be seeing free navigation support for the Nokia N95 and other S60 3.1 devices. However, as we noted in an earlier story Nokia have reduced the licenses prices significantly for pre-3.3 versions of Ovi Maps, which means navigation is available for older devices at a very low cost.

Ovi Maps 3.3 (3.03) on the E71 and E66

Ovi Maps is a relatively large install and will be placed on the C: drive, so you will need to ensure that you have enough free disk space (recommended 10MB or more) before installing the new version. It will replace any existing version of Ovi Maps or Nokia Maps that is installed on the device.

In usage there are occasions, as with earlier version on the Nokia E71, when Ovi Maps can feel somewhat sluggish compared to more recent devices. However the streamlined user interface is a significant improvement and the new version is a recommended install for all E71 and E66 users, not least for the availability of free car and pedestrian navigation.

Ovi Maps for the Nokia E71 and E66 will be made available via the maps.nokia.com website. It will also likely appear in the Ovi Store shortly.

Maemo 5

The UI in Maemo 5 has changed with respect to its predecessors. It provides four fully customizable (add/remove widgets, move widgets around, change the background, shortcut to applications/contacts) "Home" screens, called Panorama Desktop. Switching from one desktop to the others is done by sliding one's finger horizontally on the background. The dashboard is accessed via the upper left icon and shows all the running applications, in a manner similar to the Exposé feature in Apple's MacOS X operating system.

From the dashboard, running applications can be brought back to fullscreen by tapping the preview window or applications can be closed by tapping an X-symbol located in the top right corner of the preview window, similar to the concept of closing applications in the Windows operating system series. The application launcher, where all the installed applications can be launched, can be accessed as well from the dashboard by tapping the same area again in the upper left corner of the screen which invokes the dashboard. If no task or application is running in the background, tapping the top left icon skips the dashboard and directly displays the application launcher.

Maemo provides the Mozilla-based MicroB web-browser with complete Adobe Flash support, which can operate over a wireless connection. It supports an 800x480 display resolution, so some web pages can be viewed without horizontal scrolling. It can automatically connect to known wireless networks and download RSS feeds and email and disconnect automatically without user intervention.

Software is all installed or uninstalled using the Application manager. Users can subscribe to different software repositories which can then be used to automatically keep software up to date. The Application manager also provides an overview of everything currently installed on the system. Data can be synchronized with a PC via a USB connection, and the users files can be accessed using the standard Removable Storage Device protocol.

Maemo is a software platform developed by Nokia for smartphones and Internet Tablets. It is based on the Debian Linux distribution.
The platform comprises the Maemo operating system and the Maemo SDK.

Maemo is mostly based on open source code, and has been developed by Maemo Devices within Nokia in collaboration with many open source projects such as the Linux kernel, Debian, and GNOME. Maemo is based on Debian GNU/Linux and draws much of its GUI, frameworks, and libraries from the GNOME project. It uses the Matchbox window manager, and the GTK-based Hildon as its GUI and application framework.

The UI in Maemo 4 is similar to many handheld interfaces, and features a "Home" screen, which acts as a central point from which all applications and settings are accessed. The Home Screen is divided into areas for launching applications, a menu bar, and a large customisable area that can display information such as an RSS reader, Internet radio player, and Google search box.

The Maemo 5 UI is slightly different: The menu bar and info area are consolidated to the top of the display, and the four desktops can be customized with shortcuts and widgets.

At the Mobile World Congress in February 2010, it was announced that the Maemo project would be merging with Moblin to create the MeeGo mobile software platform.

Nokia Phone as a Scanner

I apologise to old camera-phone hands who've been down this road before - this will seem a bit obvious, but, for the newcomers around here and to anyone who might not have thought this laterally before, consider that your auto-focus camera in your Symbian smartphone is good enough to replace a Scanner for occasional use.

I discovered this when my old Canon desktop scanner fell into disuse because it plugged in using the PC parallel port and I simply ran out of computers which had one of these. I'm not a big scanner user and didn't miss it much - and, being just an average home, we don't have our own photocopier. Then one day my wife popped into my office with two A4 classroom worksheets: "Can you scan these in, please, and print off a dozen copies?"

Tempting though it was to scarper off to the local library and pay the £2 or so needed for the copying, it suddenly occurred to me that, with a 3 megapixel camera in my Nokia N93, surely that was good enough to produce a good-enough representation of anything put before it? After all, I could focus exactly, even add in some fill-in LED flash if needed. It was time to experiment.

And, you know what? The end result of my improvised workflow was quite good enough for the classroom worksheets, as I'll show below with another example. Most importantly, for a geek like me, it meant yet another use for my smartphone, one more example of convergence that's useful in the real world. Bah, who needs a scanner or photocopier now?

Obviously, there are large numbers of office situations where you do in fact need dedicated bits of kit, but for occasional home use I've now managed without a scanner for almost four years, simply using whichever phone I happened to be using.

Here's what I do, should you also not have thought of this and want to try your hand at using your phone-scanner.

1. You'll need a phone with an auto-focus camera. So anything of the order of the Nokia N93, N95, N82, E90, E71, N85, 5800, Samsung INNOV8, etc. (from just the S60 range), or the Sony Ericsson P1i or P990i (from the old UIQ range). Think of 3 megapixels as a bare minimum here, you'll need this much resolution if you want to scan in text accurately enough to read back later.

To show that all this is possible using the aforementioned minimum, I'm using the small-apertured 3 megapixel, auto-focus camera on the Nokia 5800 for the example. If this phone can work as a scanner then it'll be a piece of cake with most of the rest of the list mentioned above.

2. Find a nice, light window ledge (but not in direct sunlight) - you want even, bright, white lighting. Don't assume that indoor lights will do, however bright they seem to the naked eye - the human eye is incredibly good at adapting and fooling your brain. Place your document/page flat and then position the phone to fit the page within the frame, as shown here.

Focus and take the shot, as usual, while trying desperately not to shake the camera as you squeeze the shutter. If the light levels are high enough then you won't have a problem here.

3. Connect up your phone to your desktop (PC or Mac) and transfer the photo using whichever multimedia/image transfer system you prefer. OK, you've now 'scanned' your page, but the JPG file needs a little work on it before you're done. (Again, please remember that this is something of a beginner's tutorial, I'm not trying to patronise those who know all this already!)

You'll need a basic photo manipulation application, I use an old cover-disk version of Paintshop Pro on the PC and the freeware SeaShore on the Mac. If you can't find anything, you can always use Adobe's online app instead for free.

4. Open up the JPG file in your chosen photo app:

Not bad, a well-focussed, reasonably well lit 3 megapixel photo, if I do say so myself. Here's a cropped part of it, to show the sort of level of detail captured by a 3mp phone camera:

5. Again, pretty good, and certainly good enough for casual scanning/photocopying.

6. For printing out again, assuming that's what you need here, i.e. using the phone-desktop-printer combination as a photocopier, it's usually a good idea to perform a few basic operations on the JPG file. The exact details will vary, depending on your chosen software, but for this sort of use, I typically:

* Crop the edges to within the paper boundaries
* Bring the brightness up a bit and the contrast up a lot
* (if needed) Convert to greyscale or even, as here, to black and white (2 colours) or similar

Here's the sort of thing I end up with:

Again, all this is with the rather average camera (by Nseries standards) on the Nokia 5800 - you'll get much better quality still using the likes of the N95 or N82.

It's also worth thinking even more laterally about your phone as a document capture device. In a meeting and can't be bothered to write down everything someone's just scribbled all over a whiteboard? Just stand up and photograph the board and transcribe/refer to it later. At a restaurant and sent off to enquire about the specials of the day? No point in trying to remember them all or write them all down, just photograph the blackboard and read off at your leisure from Gallery later. And so on.

A recent Screen Digest report has estimated that the mobile gaming market will be worth $4 billion by 2012, all this with only 5% of consumers having played games on their handsets.

In recent months, we’ve seen different companies enter into the mobile phone games industry with their new offerings. This is a strong indication that the untapped potential of the industry is vast and an opportunity to get more people playing games on phones.

Big publishers like EA are showing they’re serious about making games for mobile alongside their console and PC activities and giving a strong indication that the mobile games industry is worth taking notice of.

If the appeal of mobile gaming is so great that the global gaming giants are playing ball, Nokia and the other players out there must be doing something right.

Communities Create Their Own Content

As we’ve seen with the huge success of several MMOs on PC, the ability to interact with the people you’re playing against really intensifies the enjoyment of playing games. Cross platform titles like Reset Generation allow players to play from their N-Gage enabled device or from a Web widget, against each other. We have also made available the assets of Reset Generation to the community, so that they can create their own games, experiences or mash-ups with one another.

With players in over 130 countries connected by N-Gage, the coming together of communities has never been easier and this has allowed the sharing of ideas, content and experiences.

So, for me, this poses a really interesting question: “Will the next big innovations in mobile gaming come from the developers, or from the players themselves?” It is, after all, the players who are trying to get the most from the games and want to find new ways of making their experiences more personal. Developers can do this to a certain degree but in the end, with user generated content (UGC), it is the players who can decide what they want from a game.

Our research at Nokia has shown us that players want games where they can play, share content and experiences with their friends, not to be stuck in a one dimensional game that offers little or no interaction with other players. We are exploring this significantly through our upcoming title Yamake, where the focus of the title is making your own games and sharing them. The explosion of content, that is driven by the players themselves, is mindblowing. The future is going to be very interesting!

Entertainment and New Technologies

The traditional notion that mobile games are just time fillers is now being challenged as we introduce titles that explore new directions.

With the current mobile device hardware, phones are more powerful than ever before. The processing power of a Nokia N96 makes it able to handle graphics that are ground breaking and gameplay that is the best of its kind. This means that mobile games can offer imaginative new ways of playing with fun and lively story lines which can appeal to all players. We are seeing new forms of gameplay methods being introduced to provide different ways of challenging players but improving the experience. Cell Weaver is one that has been used in Star Wars. You fight against opponents by using different key combinations – if you’re an avid texter, you’ll be great!

New technologies in mobile devices are giving players the chance to play games anytime, anywhere. This means playing games on the move and developers creating games that are specifically made for mobile. This provides, for example, the opportunity to come up with intuitive ways for players to receive and send information in-game. The only limitation to what can be achieved in mobile gaming is now the imaginations of the developers. Technology has finally caught up with ideas and game conceptualization.

Something else we are seeing is that there are more and more sensors now being built into mobile phones. Accelerometers for example are becoming an increasingly common feature of games, and we’ve seen with applications on other devices that they can generate a new scope for different movements and interaction. The potential to now include a phone’s camera also means that augmented reality games can begin to break into the mainstream and offer a completely fresh approach to gaming and, along with location based titles, could create an entirely new gaming genre. At the same time, games have the potential to link across different services such as music and maps, and bring a compelling experience which is personal in nature and to the context (where and what) of the user.

Finally with the N-Gage SDK, we’re making the creation of great gameplay easy to achieve. Our stringent testing and quality control of N-Gage titles means that all games must be of the highest quality, something that’s always been essential for us at Nokia. We believe it’s also important to encourage developers to think innovatively. Since February we’ve been running the Mobile Games Innovation Challenge (www.gamingchallenge.org) where we had over 140 entries from developers across the world. This is a wonderful opportunity for upcoming developers to show the industry what they can do and for existing developers to push the boundaries of what they’ve achieved before and come up with something truly inspiring. The three winners have been selected by an independent jury and the winners will be presented at the Nokia Game Summit in Rome later this month.

With recent Juniper research revealing that in North America alone, the mobile gaming industry is set to grow by 275% by 2012, it’s now up to us as an industry to stand up, take notice, build on our past performance and evolve.

How to connected a Bluetooth Keyboard

The most central compromise involved in choosing a smartphone is whether to go for something with a qwerty keyboard or not. If you do want one, then you've got to accept some compromises in device size and screen to keys ratio. Or else be prepared for something that folds or hinges somehow. And even then, at the end of the day, you've got a solution with much smaller keys than you're used to - let's hope you've got small and nimble fingers...

One solution to this dilemma is to use a Bluetooth wireless keyboard, as shown above. Folded, the keyboard (the Nokia SU-8W is used here, perhaps the best and most compatible of any of the breed) is still relatively large, but you don't have to have it out all the time. It's best kept in the car glovebox or briefcase, etc, ready for when you really need it.

So you've bought the SU-8W (or similar) and have them on the desk in front of you. The first thing to note is the way the left side of the keyboard has an extending and unfolding stand, as shown below. I'd owned this keyboard for a good week or two before I even noticed this feature.... Blush.

Also note the battery hatch on the back. Go stick in two AAA batteries while you're there. They'll last for ages. In my experience, we're talking months on a single set of two, so don't worry too much over the cost. And if you don't use the keyboard much, a set of AAAs has been known to last two years.

The next thing you need is the Nokia Wireless Keyboard application/driver. It's built into almost every S60 phone of theirs, but in a few rare cases you may need to grab it from the Web. Install it in the usual way.

One you've got this loaded, turn the SU-8W on by holding the red power button in for a couple of seconds. The green and blue LEDs should flash intermittently. Now go to 'Find keyboard' on the utility's menu. This is going to lead you through pairing up the specific keyboard with your specific phone - I'm guessing you could do the Bluetooth pairing manually, as you would any other Bluetooth accessory, but when the Nokia utility does all the work for you...?

After scanning for, and finding (after a few seconds) your keyboard, you'll be prompted to enter a passcode. There's nothing magical about this, just make up any number. It's only a temporary thing to make sure that the right phone and right keyboard get paired.

After entering the same number on the SU-8W keyboard and pressing 'Enter' (on the keyboard itself - and watch the function key - it's needed for entering numbers), select the language model that you've bought and you're done.

You can check that it all works by going into (for example) Notes and starting to type. Like magic, isn't it?

From now on, connections should be automatic. You can check this by turning your keyboard off (press and hold the power button for a few seconds again) and waiting. After a short wait, the 'Disconnected' sign will appear on the phone screen. Now power the keyboard on again and wait. Again, after a few seconds, you'll be automatically 'Connected' again. This is because the Wireless Keyboard utility sets up home in RAM (it will auto-start when the phone is power on, by default) and is always watching and waiting for this particular Bluetooth connection.

TIP: If you do go for the SU-8W, note the extra keys that match up to those on your phone:

Left function key and right function key (near the bottom right of the keyboard) do exactly as you'd expect, and can be a time saver when the phone itself is perched on the foldout stand

Arrow keys - these function exactly as d-pad up/down/left/right

D-pad centre (the blue dot) - simulates pressing in the phone's d-pad

S60 menu key - brings up the main S60 applications menu, again as you'd expect

Messaging (the blue envelope) - switches you to Messaging

So Nokia is world's biggest computer maker in 2008

So yes, its time for yet another instance of mobile phones taking surprising victories in the digital convergence battle. I reported the general trend in my previous posting, and the conclusion that when only considering "smartphones" - even by that tight measure of these new "pocket computers" - the numbers have tilted this year, and now for 2008 the world's biggest computer maker is no longer Hewlett-Packard or Dell, it is Nokia.

Today I dug up the various numbers as best as I could (using Gartner, Analsys, IDC, Apple). I included all PC sales, all smartphone sales, all stand-alone PDA sales, and estimated also mainframe and mini computer sales into the total, and arrived at a total computer sales figure for the last four quarters (from October 2007 to September 2008) of 465 million. Note that PCs account for 300 million of those, so when we add the smartphones we are going about 50% bigger in the overall picture. But I think it is a fair measure to include smartphones (see below).

So here is the breakdown according to my analysis of the biggest computer makers in the world in 2008:

THEN I NEED TO MAKE A COUPLE OF NOTES

First note on Apple. I also was very generous with Apple, I not only added their official numbers for Macintosh PC and notebook sales, and iPhone sales, but also the iPod Touch is another equivalent "pocket computer" and could be considered a PDA just as easily as a media player. Because

it includes the ability to download applications and otherwise is a valid computer, only very small, I am including it.

But Apple does not release iPod breakdowns in sales, and no analyst is supplying them either. So I made a very rough estimate - and simply because there are four models of iPods available (Touch, Classic, Nano and Shuffle) - I attributed one quarter of all iPod sales to the Touch. I am pretty sure that is way too much, considering that the Touch is at the top end of the price range and costs nearly five times as much as the cheapest Shuffle - but with these numbers Apple would be fourth biggest computer maker. It is relatively close to Acer, so if my math is badly of, then Apple may fall down one peg. The distance to Dell is too much that its extremely unlikely that Apple would be the third biggest.

Second, a note on Nokia

Nokia numbers are only the smartphone sales as reported by Gartner and Analys. So the mainstream Nokia phones, from low cost phones to featurephones, are excluded. The above count is only for smartphones. Also I have not included the Nokia non-phone devices (their media players and internet tablets) even though these could also be included, because I don't find those numbers reported. With them the Nokia number would be marginally bigger still.

Third on the full 2008 year numbers

Note that my analysis can only include reported numbers so obviously I cannot report on the current quarter until those numbers are formally released. But I believe the actual numbers will be very similar to these, because of the overall economic downturn. So it is very likely that the actual fourth quarter 2008 numbers are not as much above their 2007 numbers, as the earlier part of the year has been. With companies the need to slash budgets has been severe, so its likely that corporate purchases of PCs is particularly hard-hit this fourth quarter. With residential purchases, the laptop or PC is quite an expensive gift, so my gut says, that types of gifts are going to suffer more in Christmas sales than smaller gifts. And this is likely also to affect smartphones. So at least the percentages will be very similar after the fourth quarter 2008 numbers are released, the aggregate number may end up a couple of percentage points higher (or not) for this year. None of the companies will move significantly on their rankings based on fourth quarter performance and Nokia's lead is now insurmountable for this year.

FINALLY, WHY IS A SMARTPHONE A COMPUTER

Some might argue that every mobile phone is a computer (as its guts are of course managed by microprocessor) and that can be justified. Almost all modern (non-smartphone) mobile phones do have a browser and far more than half of new phones this year have Java and can accept downloads of content and things such as games. Those who use this defintion will probably know that Nokia became the world's biggest computing device manufacturer back in the early parts of this decade, selling more phones (ie "computing devices") than all PC makers put together. But by this definition should we also consider the Playstation a computer and our home DVR/PVR (hard disk drive recorder for our TV, like TiVo or Sky+). We could then add our microwave and coffee maker while we're at it..

I think basic mobile phones should not be considered computers. But smartphones - that is a totally different matter. In my long posting for the holidays, I celebrated 50 years of computers in Finland and in it I also made comparisons of the performance of computers and that of smartphones. A modern smartphone has all the elements traditionally considered key parts of a true computer. It has a CPU, memory, storage, an input and output system. A smartphone has a standard operating system which allows users to download and install applications (software). Not just content, but actual applications.

The dictionary definition of a computer says the device can be programmed, and the common usage today means it can accept applications to be installed by the user (this was not the common usage in the 1970s, in the era of the mainframe when the PC emerged; at that time common usage was a programming language compiler and all programs were coded in something like Fortran or Cobol or Pascal etc. None of us normal users bother to use a programming language today on our PC). The definition says can be programmed and a normal phone does not accept user-installed applications, but every smartphone - by definition - does. It fits the definition just as well as a supercomputer.

And if you're thinking "but the phone is a toy, its not a "proper" computer, then do recognize that the top end smartphone of today (like my Nokia E90 Communicator or N82) has the specifications that match essentially all critical components of a supercomputer from only some 20 years ago, the Cray 2. For example the processing speed of these top smartphones runs roughly in the 1,000 MIPS range (millions of instructions per second). That was the speed of the Cray 2. Its earlier sibling, the Cray 1, had a speed of 150 MIPS. A top end Nokia managed that speed three years ago.

Note I am not arguing that we have a "real supercomputer" in our pocket. But I am arguing, that the smartphone fits all the definitions of a computer by what it is, and what it can do. And by its performance, it will match the performance of the most powerful computer on the planet from two decades ago. Or more close to everyday people, will match the performance of an entry-level laptop only five years ago.

There are smartphones that use the Windows operating system (modified for mobile phones) and the Apple iPhone uses a variant of the Macintosh OS/X operating system. There are smartphones that use Linux the third of the main computer operating systems. I think it is perfectly valid to consider smartphones as computers today. They may be small, but they are computers in every way. To discriminate against them, to me is as dumb, as if someone in the 1980s had said that we should not count the personal computer as a "real computer" and only mainframe computers should be included in statistics of computers.

HOW IS IT USED?

So then you might say, ok, it has the performance of an old computer, maybe, but its use is as a phone, so it should be considered a phone, not a computer. I think this is a tricky angle. What if you have an old desktop computer that sits at home, connected to the broadband, but you have your newer laptop on which you do all of your regular computer activities. And you have reconfigured your desktop with Skype to be your phone, and you only use it as a phone. Did the computer stop being a computer now because its primary use is as a phone? No, it is still a computer.

But consider this. The most common use, the so-called killer application for a PC today is internet access. Do we use a smartphone for internet access? Yes we do. Look at an iPhone, massive internet access, both over 3G and on WiFi. The smartphone is USED like a computer is used. For many iPhone users, the internet access is the most desired feature, far more important than voice calls, so it is, for those users, primarily a wireless internet access device. Totally replicates computer use, and there is even the study earlier this year that about half of iPhone users are migrating computer use away from their laptops and onto their iPhones. Its no fantasy of mine. An iPhone is for many of its owners, a partial (or even complete) replacement of a computer. If it replaces a computer, and it fits the computer's definition perfectly, should it not be called a computer then?

And take a common application used on personal computers today, email. Now a smartphone, Blackberry. Across most of its users, the Blackberry is the preferred and primary email device. The first evidence of email usage shifting away from laptops to Blackberries was reported back in 2001 and has been consistenty reported this whole decade. Another computer use, that is clearly perfectly capable of being done on a smartphone. Its not just that it is capable of performing like a "real computer", a smartphone is so good at it, that many people are shifting their computing use away from desktops and laptops to smartphones like the iPhone and the Blackberry.

And I haven't even started on the Developing World, where mobile phone based internet access outnumbes PC based internet access by as much as 10 to 1. Where a smartphone is often the only way to have any computing ability at all, within a reasonable budget - and where landline based broadband is non-existent, or intermittent, and often frightfully expensive. Talk to users in the Philippines or India or Kenya or South Africa, that can a smarphone be a computer, and they'll mostly say, that it not only can be, it is.

WILL NOT STOP USE ON BIGGER COMPUTERS

And please don't misunderstand me. I'm not singing alarms of the "end of the PC". Just like the fact that mobile emerged as a new mass media channel, did not end the previous six media, just like the internet did not end the previous five or TV end the previous four mass media. They all just adjusted for the newest form. The same is true of smartphones and bigger computers. We will not stop using laptops and big government etc uses will not stop with mainframes and supercomputers.

What the smartphone now allows, is for some computer use to migrate to it. It really does make sense, that heavy email users love their Blackberries. It is better for many uses of basic email, than a PC. The same will happen with many other uses, like the iPhone which is a particularly well used camera to upload pictures to Flickr, ahead of many major digital camera brands with their SLR versions; and ahead of all other cameraphones. Its particularly good at both easy capture of pictures - and easy uploading (to Flickr in this case). With a digital camera, we usually have to go the extra step of moving the pictures to our PC, and from there upload to Flickr. But it can be done direct from a smartphone, and apparently iPhone users are very prone to doing so.

This kind of usage will be seen on smartphones. Probably lots of videos, so YouTube watching (and uploading videos from smartphones, in particular those with DVD quality videocameras like my N82) will be very suited for smartphone use. But note, its not a particularly pleasant environment for editing pictures (no mouse for example, and in editing pictures you can never have too large a screen ha-ha). So for editing our images, if we have one, we will prefer to do that on a PC.

So please don't misunderstand me, even though some users of the Blackberry or iPhone are shifting behaviour away from the PC, that is not going to shift the majority of PC users to smartphones. It took laptops 23 years to replace desktops as the most sold form of PC this year, and even so, the installed base is predominantly desktops still in 2008, and will continue to be for a few more years. The PC has at least a decade, proably two, before the smartphone could hope to reach it in size of the installed base.

AM NOT ALONE

Also this is not something only "Silly Tomi" would think of. Nokia has been calling its N-Series not mobile phones, but since 2005 already - for three years - they've called them "multimedia computers." Apple calls its iPhone their variant of the netbook. And that is also what the Economist concluded in its big celebration of the Personal Computer anniversary issue. So this is becoming an accepted view, that smartphones are indeed small, pocketable palmtop sized computers. But real computers, yes.

It is a question of size only. The smartphone is the most personal of computers, it fits in our pocket, we carry it everywhere. It should be counted in the total numbers of computers. And with that change to how computers are counted, yes, this year for the first time, Nokia becomes the biggest maker of computers in the world, Apple jumps to fourth place, and RIM hits the seventh biggest maker slot, ahead of Toshiba who invented the laptop. You can quote me on that..

Looks like we're getting to the stage where serious apps and games can now be written in Python for S60 - witness Jomtris, released today, complete with (late) festive theme, which works on all devices with portrait QVGA displays. Screen and links below.

This free Tetris clone features a festive background and simple controls. The game was developed by Jouni Miettunen and requires you to have Python installed (on the installation disk).

Nokia N85 Review

Let's start with the camera, and the 5 megapixel lens/sensor. While that size is starting to feel a touch au fait with people watching spec sheets, in the real world it's a big number and more than enough to suffice for good sized pictures. The addition of a camera lens cover is something that will be welcomed by many, although Steve has demonstrated that only a small fraction of pictures may be affected in this article. The point is that this part of the design of the N85, like many, is geared more towards regular phone users moving up to a bigger and better model.

The camera software is the usual S60 bundle, and as in the original N95, the action of opening the lens cover brings the camera application to the foreground. Although the UI of S60 on the N85 has received some tweaks, getting to certain applications such as the camera fast is still important - the physical action of the lens cover is a good UI touch.

While the software interface hasn't necessarily changed on the N85, there's the change to the organic LED display, providing for a much brighter screen with a wider viewing angle. Take the N85 out for some outdoor shooting in bright sunlight (admittedly not a huge concern in Scotland) and you will be able to see the 'modern viewfinder' with ease - unlike some previous (mainly non-Nokia) phones where you were shooting at shapes and making your best guess.

While carrying the now-mentioned-everywhere Carl Zeis lens, the N85 is not on a par with other 5 megapixel cameras in the Nseries range - there's a lot more to a camera than the sensor resolution, with both the CMOS light capturing chip and the software algorithms used making as much, if not more, of a difference to the final image. Its response in darkness was poor compared to other phones in the 'night' setting; and while the Dual LED flash is a step up from the single LED's on previous phones, the physics of an LED flash means the camera shutter needs to be open for longer, leading to a slight blurriness in any action shots.

With the N85 targeted towards the mass market, and ergo as low a unit build cost as possible, the addition of a Xenon flash, which would please camera fanatics, has probably been deemed too expensive both in fabrication costs and added complexity to the device, which is already in an amazingly small footprint

Colours on the pictures are vivid, especially when placed next to similar shots from other phones. This appears to be a result of the software used to process the pictures zapping up the colour saturation on the shots, which gives a wonderful feeling of richness to the pictures, but can, when colours are already very bright, lead to some overpowering touches on the camera (the extra colour from the OLED screen only serves to enhance this effect even more!). Zooming in on the images, the edges are a bit more broken up when compared to other camera shots which I'm going to put down to the improving Nokia software sitting on top of a mid priced CMOS.

This is born out when you look at the video recording on the N85, which, while a smooth 30 frames per second, does struggle to keep the rich colours on display. There's a touch more of a washed out look in these videos when compared to pictures taken in the same circumstances. My only concern would be the microphone pick-up in video can be a bit tinny, and certainly not as good a quality as when using the microphones on the N95, let alone the venerable N93.

But this again misses the target market of the N85. It's not a phone for audio/video professionals, it's for the man in the street, much as this is a tired marketing phrase - in the case of the N85, it's accurate. What it delivers on the camera front is strong and is definitely above average, and has enough simplicity for most while retaining enough settings and tweaks so the amateur photographers who do end up with this camera will not be disappointed.

Of course, media is not just about creating content, it's about consuming content as well, and the N85 scores here too. Again the package of applications will be familiar to S60 users, with the music player accessed from either the media key, or from an application icon. I've long argued on behalf of the interface that Nokia now use for the music player, with a top level menu guiding you to your choice of artists, albums, or your play lists. And when you do get into these lists, having an alpha-numeric keypad to help searching means that you'll get to your music collection a lot faster than on a regular MP3 player.

Before the iPhone/iPod Touch arrived, I would have said that the Nokia S60 application was the best mobile music browser - with touch enabled on the newer iPhones there's a certain ease of use that comes with sliding a finger down a list (as an aside, I've not yet tried the 5800's solution) but I would still rate the S60 player a strong overall second, and still the best for a key-based solution.

Nokia have added the idea of scrolling in the navi-wheel; running your fingers around the cursor ring will scroll your on-screen cursor. It's a workable solution, but impossible to switch on only for the music application. It's either on or off, and that's decided in the general settings. Unfortunately, not every S60 application uses the navi-wheel (including some of Nokia's own apps) so it's hit and miss if it's going to work in any application. It's also, frustratingly, either hyper accurate or as sluggish as John Sergeant on Strictly Come Dancing, and, as I keep switching it off because of this, I rarely have it available for the music application. It would be nice to have it running just in the music app, and I think it does add some ease of use in searching through music.

Running a Bluetooth stereo audio profile means your hands-free stereo headphones can use the N85 with ease, and the inclusion of a (by now standard on Nseries devices) 3.5mm stereo socket means you can use your favourite listening device. Reproduction from the sound chip is accurate and clear, and on a par with pretty much every mid to high end digital audio player out there. The encoding you use on your music files is going to have a greater effect on your music collection than any defects here.

The loudspeaker on the N85 did leave me a touch disappointed. I've taken to using my phones as audio players when working around the house, and comparing the speakers on the N85 to other devices left the N85 lacking. It sounded flat, with little crispness once you got above about half volume. It's nothing more than average, and most other phones reproduce music much more cleanly.

The N85 provides another option in the FM transmitter. One of the more popular third party peripherals of recent times, the N85 has a small low powered FM transmitter that will relay whatever is playing out to any FM radio close by. You can select the frequency, so as long as you're within a few feet of a radio, you'll get your music on that sound system. It'[s a feature many will ignore, but for two scenarios I can see this being a great tool. The first is obviously for car drivers, and the second is when at a party. The N85 speaker won't suffice to fill a chattering room, but put it next to a suitably tuned in stereo, and the music on the phone will be happily shared. It's an old school solution, but works wonderfully.

Congrats also in the GUI as you can launch the FM transmitter from the menu when playing a track. This integration of the media-related applications is also seen in the Podcasting section - you have the option to jump to the Podcasting application (which is the only way to trigger new downloads) when you go to the menu while browsing your podcasts in the music player. Tying these applications back to the music player will help people discover and use them.

Video is well supported on the N85, with the old .3gp mobile standard sitting in there, but a huge range of other codecs available (e.g. flavours of MP4). As well as any videos you take on the built-in camera, you can copy over videos from your computer to watch on the screen. It's a touch small for watching a lot of video, but the H.264 codec is used in many MP4s and is an option in most video conversion programs so it shouldn't be too difficult

Unlike music (and specifically Nokia's Music Store), sourcing official video online has been a bit hit and miss. Yes Nokia, has YouTube Mobile (urgh - that low, low resolution) support, and that's been the main portal for online video in previous Nseries devices. The N85 has a trick up it's sleeve, though. The BBC iPlayer.

Admittedly only available for the UK user, but the iPlayer service, previously only available on the Nokia N96, used to stream most of the content broadcast by the BBC over the last 7 days, now has an added download component. You can download programs using the iPlayer widget (available at bbc.co.uk/iplayer) to your handset, and they'll be available to play in the main gallery or Video Centre at any point over the next thirty days. The restrictions (both time limited and geographically limited) are indicative of the minefield that is online video, but it's nice to see the N85 is sitting (alongside the N96) on the very bleeding edge of this.

The N85's media capabilities are at odds with the mid-range that Nokia are promoting it as aimed at. Yes, there are some elements that are partly compromised by the parts used, but while this would be unforgivable on a higher-end device, the positioning of the N85 means that these compromises are more understandable. And in all honesty you need to look hard to find them. For the user new to these features the N85 is going to be a revelation of media capabilities. So in that sense it has succeeded. There's enough here for old S60 users to consider it a worthwhile upgrade, and a huge amount of functionality for the new user.

Well, Python for S60 got an upgrade today. And what an upgrade! Cool

The announcement thread can be found here. Basically we get a lot of new goodies with this release and a few drawbacks.

Pros:

* Python 2.5.1 core. Yes, that means more modules and improved versions of the already existing ones will be available. This is very good when it comes to stability.
* Official packaging method. This is my personal favorite. The very useful Ensymble has been given a rather nice GUI which makes it easier to use.
* Better error handling. If the application raises an exception on start-up it doesn't just terminate silently but prints the traceback on the screen.

Cons:

* Much longer installation and start-up time. Really, you'll notice the difference. But like the thread says, this will be fixed.
* No support for S60 2nd Edition. Sadly, this part of the S60 family will no longer be supported now or in the future, because there are dependencies on OpenC libraries, which aren't available for 2nd Edition.

Notes:

* This release works on S60 5th Edition like the previous ones did, but it doesn't explicitly have any special features for it (like support for touch events).
* In a strange yet understandable way, the runtime isn't signed by Nokia with all capabilities like before. We only get the user-grantable set this time.
* Apparently PyS60 has moved from sourceforge and has a new home: https://garage.maemo.org/projects/pys60/
* The documentation no longer comes as a pdf file (at least this time it didn't) but as a much more comprehensive collection of HTML documents. I think this is better in pretty much every aspect.

This makes for a great Christmas gift from the PyS60 team Smile . Can't wait for version 2.0 Wink

5800 XpressMusic another Review

Size and Design

Held in the hand, the 5800 is almost identical in size to the N78 and N82. Or indeed to any other phone-sized smartphone from the last year or so. In other words, it feels great in the hand to non-geeks, whereas the likes of the N95 8GB and N96 (let alone wider devices like the Apple iPhone and HTC Touch versions) are on the chunky side for use by a 'normob' (normal mobile user). The size alone is a big clue as to who the 5800 is aimed at.

There's a demographic that is currently trying the likes of the LG Viewty and Samsung Tocco (among others), wanting a touch screen phone but not willing to stump up for a heavyweight contract in order to acquire a wider-than-they'd-really-like iPhone. This demographic (and I've talked to a fair few people in it) finds the current phone-sized touch devices too clunky, too slow and too hard to read in daylight. And they also rather wish they could have similar aspirations but with the Nokia brand name across the top. Well, now they can.

Although unashamedly a plastic 'tablet', build quality is good and the 5800 XpressMusic looks the business with its luminescent colour strips on each side:

A curious ridge all round the battery cover becomes clear when you spot that at two points on the left side are the speaker apertures, blasting sound from within the ridge. With the apertures on the left, rather than on the right (as on the N82 and other devices), I can only assume that Nokia have discovered that playing sound to reflect off a desk or lap is more effective than playing it off vertically into the air.

I liked the camera shutter key, which is nicely positive, I liked the tethered microUSB port cover and I loved the keyguard toggle. This makes for a supremely quick and handy way of turning the screen off and locking the device in a fraction of a second. And unlocking it again later.

Display

The 5800's display is perfectly sized (for the form factor), is bright (even outside in sunshine, it fares better than resistive touch screens of yesteryear) and fairly responsive. We're not talking iPhone visibility and response here, but it does the job pretty well. One of the pillars behind the iPhone's conception (and, to be fair, behind full screen PDAs since about the year 2000, including, notably Nokia's own 7710, several years before the iPhone) was the idea that very little frontal real estate was used for buttons that got in the way, i.e. the screen itself could adapt, to show graphics or maps or a full qwerty keyboard, as needed at any one moment. The 5800 means that Nokia are now in the same field with a current, fairly future-proof phone - and, to be honest, I've been quite impressed.

One downside of touch-based phones is that they're soon bedecked with fingerprints and the 5800's no exception here. Having said that, the screen is slightly recessed, as is the camera glass, so at least you don't then pick up every last piece of dust on top of the finger grease when you lay the phone down. Maybe we should all just wash our hands more?(!)

Speed

S60 now scales up or down to suit a variety of screen sizes, of course - I wasn't expecting any difficulties here. The speed of S60 5th Edition, even with 'Theme effects' turned off, isn't great yet - there's a slight lag in everything that happens. From the 50ms or so delay after tapping the screen while the haptic vibration system works, to the second or so while some application screens switch in and out, you wouldn't say that the 5800 is blindingly fast yet. However, it's clear that there is still optimsation to be done and I'd expect speed increases in many areas over the next few firmware versions. And as it stands, the 5800 XpressMusic is fast enough for the man in the street.

Touch/S60

The most interesting aspect of S60, as implemented here with a touch screen, is the way screen taps are mapped through to each application. I think Nokia have gotten this wrong in several places, with the result that double-taps are needed where single taps would be quicker and less confusing. How I think this should work is that, when faced with a screen of icons or a list of items, a single tap should behave the same as if you'd highlighted the item with a phone d-pad and then pressed in 'Enter'.

For example, in Music Library, you see the usual 'Artists', 'Albums', etc. list. If I tap on 'Albums', I want it to bring up the list of albums, not merely highlight the item, awaiting a second tap. Now, in some very specific places, lists like this have a whole string of context-sensitive options appropriate to each item and in these cases it's probably reasonable to just highlight the item and wait for the user to tap on 'Options', to decide what to do with it, e.g. in File manager or editing Access points. But in well over half the places where S60 5th Edition presents screens full of items, a double tap is needed where it's not really necessary. The end result is that the user taps once and waits. After about a second or so, when it's obvious that nothing's happening, the user sighs and taps again.

Another example: the list of bookmarks in Web. As a user, you bring up the list and expect to tap on a bookmark to go to that site. After all, what else would you want to do? In fact, there's a small chance that you might want to edit the bookmark or move it around - but this would be better handled by an 'Options' Bookmark editor function. S60's UI designers are rather caught between a rock and a hard place here - they want to keep as much of existing S60 in place as possible, yet also to embrace a new way of doing things. Something's got to give, in the interests of keeping things intuitive.

I accept the fact that there will be some inconsistency in the interface - after all, this is bolting on a whole new means of interaction onto an interface designed for one thumb. But the current situation frustrates as often as it delights.

Text entry

In most cases in the 5800 XpressMusic, tapping on a text field (in order to add or edit text) will pop up your default keyboard, i.e. the one you chose to use last. This is mostly true, though there are a few apps which insist on just the simplified alphanumeric keypad. See Rafe's preview articles (links at top) for more on the text input options. The one that interested me though was the 'Full Screen QWERTY' keyboard - even the Apple iPhone can't currently put up a wide-screen keyboard in landscape mode.

The keyboard layout itself (barely smaller than that on the huge E90) key highlighting mechanism and haptic (vibration) feedback all work rather well, your fingers will soon be trying to fly across the virtual keys. But there's a problem, in that, due to physical restrictions in the resistive touch screen, key presses have to entered below a certain minimum speed, i.e. go too fast and your keystrokes get missed. This is a shame, since I for one had harboured dreams of mastering the layout and letting my fingers work up a decent speed. Yet the faster you get the more keys are missed.

If you have access to a 5800 XpressMusic you can test this yourself. Press a virtual key and then press another while keeping the first one pressed. The second one is the only character registered, even though the screen knows where you first made contact. I'm hoping, really, really hoping that some clever screen drivers can help out to interpret the pattern of a user's taps here, to increase typing speeds for everybody.

Web

S60 Web hasn't changed much under the hood from the familiar beast on older, non-5th Edition S60 devices, although there have been some optimisations that help it turn in a faster performance, subjectively perhaps 30% faster on some byte-rich pages. The biggest change is of course in the user interface, with the old d-pad-driven, Options-led system now changed to a touch-driven, largely-toolbar-led system. The end result is something that's more functional than it is beautiful, with some functions on the pop-up tools panel, some on the traditional Options menu, and some on both.

Pages can sometimes only be dragged around with a finger once they've been fully rendered, depending on the mix of graphics and Flash objects. This latter restriction does causes problems sometimes. Once rendered, dragging the web image around isn't as smooth as on the capacitively-screened iPhone, but it's not a million miles off. There's no multi-touch here, of course, so zooming is done by double-tapping to cycle between appropriate zoom levels or by using the on-screen zoom control. I found that I was continually using the tool panel 'Full screen' function, in order to be able to see more of my page - a single tap shortcut to this function would have been handy. In landscape mode, particularly, a lot of the screen is taken up by the title bar and toolbar, rather foiling the point in having such a large screen in the first place.

As demoed in The Phones Show 72, watching Flash video 'inline' in web pages is slightly quicker and more streamlined than doing the same on older S60 devices - maybe the Flash Lite code got itself an overhaul? I was initially bemoaning the fact that YouTube clients like Mobitubia and emTube don't work on the 5800 XpressMusic (yet), but in fact it's not that painful looking for videos and watching via the full YouTube site - just steer clear of the incredibly-Flash-heavy front page if possible.

Camera/Multimedia

In good lighting, the 5800's stills and video cameras are up with the very best of Nokia's Nseries phones - the use of Carl Zeiss optics mean that things are kept crisp. However, the internal CMOS sensor is obviously quite a bit smaller, since low light photos have an order of magnitude more digital noise than the equivalents on flagships like the N95 and N96. The 5800 counters slightly, with dual LED flash keeping light levels up in dark situations and by being able to shine out the LEDs when doing video recordings, but there's no substitute for more sensor pixels at the end of the day.

The exposed camera glass also rather collects fingerprints, given that this is a touch screen phone and fingers will need to brace (on the underside) against finger taps on the front of the device - so you'll need to wipe the camera glass before any important shots!

Still, for a lower priced phone with so many other unique selling points, the camera will please many, especially if used outdoors in daylight. As demonstrated recently, there's one novelty here in that one of the video capture resolution options is wide-screen, effectively created by cropping the middle 640 by 352 pixel slice from the larger VGA video frame in its highest quality mode.

As with most recent S60 phones, Nokia hasn't been able to resist putting in a 'multimedia' key. This time in yet another different format, dropping down from the top-right of the interface at any point and simply offering shortcuts to Music player, Gallery, Share online, Video centre and Web. As usual, the multimedia menu doesn't offer anything new and only really serves to confuse people. In my opinion - hey, maybe new users will love it.....

I had no problems whatsoever with video playback, with even raw FLV (Flash video) files being played back well at full-screen size, it seems that despite the lack of video hardware, enough has been optimised in software to fill in as needed. Photo browsing was on the slow side, with only one image 'either side' of the current one being cached - it's quite easy to get ahead of the display software and end up seeing several circular 'loading' icons. In addition, even bringing a photo up for editing results in a wait of up to ten seconds - surely this will be sorted out in future firmware.

Music playback was superb, both in terms of quality, library speed and stereo speaker volume. This last is just extraordinary - the 5800 XpressMusic has the loudest speakers of any phone that I've ever tried. And there are the usual Nokia extras, such as stereo Bluetooth support (A2DP) and also TV out, for playing back music via a Hi-Fi or video/photos via a TV.

Mapping and Navigation

I ran Maps 2.0 on the 5800 over the course of a day's car navigation and had no problems whatsoever - Maps 2.0 arguably works better here than on any previous S60 device. There's the larger screen for clearer maps, plus the touch screen interaction, bringing to mind PNDs like the TomTom GO. And all on your phone, etc. The loud speakers (sic) also helped here, for spoken directions.

Gaming

It's really way too early to call the 5800 XpressMusic a success in respect of games. The device comes with a version of Global Race, an arcade driving game that unfortunately suffers from lack of hardware graphics acceleration (it flies on the N95, E90, etc) and an annoying platform puzzler 'Bounce' (though my daughter enjoyed this!). More than any other application genre, games will need to be rewritten to take into account the new screen size, lack of d-pad and touch-screen layer. N-Gage-compatibility is promised, so there are games on the way from this direction, at least.

Whether the large screen, combined with lack of graphics oomph, will be a problem remains to be seen. At worst case, it might just mean an absence of 3D/sports games. At best, the extra flexibility of having a touch screen will make new genres a possibility for the first time under S60.

Services and third party applications

In recent times, I've had cause to talk quite a bit about Samsung's latest S60 smartphones, in the context of their firmware taking a while to be finalised, but also focussing on support for such newcomers from software developers and service providers. Having a top end phone or smartphone is about much more than just the features you get out of the box.

Such is the case with the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, with many of Nokia's own services and addons still not recognising the 5800, even after it's been out on the streets in some parts of the world for almost a month. Mind you, I'd expect the pace of compatibility with the rest of the world to be much faster than with the slightly more 'niche' Samsungs - this is the mighty Nokia, after all, with huge resources being thrown at their new device and platform (S60 5th Edition) from all directions, plus the popularity of the 5800 XpressMusic is more or less guaranteed, ensuring a constant stream of attention from developers.

Rafe has already talked a lot about backwards compatibility for S60 5th Edition and this big touch-screen. Among applications that I was particularly interested in, Google's Java Gmail client installed but was very clunky to use - it's based around the assumption that a d-pad is present and on the 5800 you have to use the on-screen virtual d-pad. Best ScreenSnap worked brilliantly for capturing the images in this review, Google Maps 2.3 worked brilliantly as well, with Street View looking great in landscape mode and controllable using touch - on S60, a real novelty. Quickoffice is in the 5800's Download! Catalog (as opposed to being in ROM), which is fair enough for the target market - this also seemed to work well, although I didn't upgrade it to 'editing' status.

Verdict

The hardware team have done a cracking job on the 5800 XpressMusic, it looks and feels like a high quality product. It even feels sexier than the Apple iPhone, although it can't match the latter's speed, graphical prowess or breadth of applications. But then it is a lot cheaper, both SIM-free and on contract. And, in its own way, has some very appealing features: the widescreen video recording, the application of touch to Web, Nokia Maps and Google Maps, the high quality stills camera, the terrific music playback and loud output. Plus the usual Nokia telephony and connectivity strengths.

Bottom line: if I was handed a 5800 XpressMusic, an Apple iPhone 3G and a HTC Touch HD, and was asked to pick one, all costs covered, I would still pick the 5800, even though it's by far the cheapest. It's already a competent contender in the phone world - with some TLC (Tender Loving Care) from Nokia's firmware department over the next few months, it should rise to become a mid-tier flagship.

Do you know what you've installed on your S60 device? Where it came from, where it's stored, how big is it? Or, maybe you'd like to uninstall an old application? If so, Application Manager is what you need.

1. From the main menu, choose "Tools" then "App mgr."
2. Here you'll see a list of applications found on your device, highlight one and choose "Options"

From the options menu you can "View details" to find the version number, supplier, memory location, application size, format, and more. You can also "Remove" to uninstall the application from your device.

Graphic Acceleration on Mobile Phone

Having heard many a user refer to 'upgrading' from (for example) a Nokia N95 8GB to an N85, I thought it worth examining an important way in which all is not necessarily positive when going from an older phone to a newer one.

Yes, the N85 has USB charging, the N79 has theme-switching backplates, the N96 has a DVB-H receiver built-in, and so on. But none of these, and, as far as I know, neither do the even newer 5800 XpressMusic and N97, have the same oomph under the bonnet as the 'classic' generation of S60 3rd Edition devices: the Nokia N93, N93i, N82, N95, N95 8GB and E90. All of these had dedicated graphics acceleration, thanks to the Texas Instruments OMAP 2420 chip used in their design.

Graphics acceleration is where a piece of software (e.g. a game) calls a standard OpenGL routine (to calculate and draw a particular 3D vector, for example) and, rather than the main phone processor having to do all the sums long-hand, the built-in graphics hardware, built from the ground up for this sort of job, leaps into action and does the work in a fraction of the time.

The end result, for the user, is that many games (e.g. Oval Racer, FIFA 07, Quake, Global race, Crash Bandicoot, Panda Manda, Knights of the Dark Age, to name a few) run smoother and faster, videos play back with no glitches (handling a wider range of resolutions and bitrates without stuttering) and graphics-heavy applications run without problems (e.g. Mobitubia, the YouTube client can play back videos smoothly at the same time as downloading them as fast as possible).

It might help to put the scale of the difference into some sort of numerical perspective. Running SPMark, a standard benchmarking tool, on the Nokia N82 (as representative of the 'classic' line, e.g. N95), the N78 (as representative of the latest non-accelerated S60 3rd Edition FP2 phones) and the N96 (different in its own way since it has a STMicroelectronics chip that's dedicated to audio and video playback), we discover the following scores:

The helicopter demo simulates a commercial game pretty well. Run Oval Racer, for example, on your chosen S60 handset, and you'll see very similar frame rates to the SPMark test. On the N82, N95, etc, the game's gloriously smooth, with textured graphics right, left and centre. On the N78, N79 and N96, etc, it's sluggish and much, much less fun.

Why has Nokia changed the chipset they're using for their top end smartphones in such a detrimental way? With games and multimedia being hotter than ever in the handheld and phone world, surely more graphics power and not less would have been the way to go? The N95 has almost TEN TIMES more graphics power than its successor, the N96.

So far, RealPlayer has been tweaked enough that many users many not notice that their phone is underpowered, and N-Gage games have been written specifically to not depend on the presence of hardware OpenGL acceleration, i.e. they have been written to the lowest common denominator. So few people have noticed that the Emperor's not wearing any clothes.

Nokia will of course say that the internals of their phones were changed because of cost issues, it's all about building to a price and a specific market segment. But I have a feeling that, in the face of competition from the graphics-accelerated Apple iPhone, this chipset downgrade decision will come home to bite Nokia where it hurts most.

Is it too late to stop the rot? I hope not. I really, really hope that Nokia are even now preparing a flagship or two with just as much power as the Nokia N93 of over two and a half years ago and the N95 of 20 months ago. Care to comment on all this, Nokia? Is it too late to solder in a graphics chip into your 2009 flagship, the N97?

PS. Incidentally, the latest Samsung S60 phones, the i8510 and i7110 also have an OMAP chipset, the 2430 (I won't bore you with the differences between the 2420 and 2430). Let's try the i7110 at the SPMark test:

So, performance that's not quite as good as that in the 'classic' Nokia S60 phones, but within striking distance. For one thing, the OMAP 2430 isn't quite as capable as the 2420, and we also perhaps have to factor in that the i7110 and all Samsung's other S60 phones are on early firmware - there may yet be optimisations to come... But still a heck of a lot better than any of Nokia's hardware from 2008/2009.

Nokia Slow power up

I've been a happy E90 user for more than a year.

Recently, it suddenly takes 5 minutes to power up. The key board lights up, and the back light on the screen glows black, but the white "nokia" screen will not come up until then.
I've seen this problem mentioned on some Nokia boards and I searched this forum but couldn't find a good solution.
I've tried hard resetting the phone via *#7370# but the problem persists.

Latest 2.x firmware (not the recent 3.x yet.. BB connect), No new apps or any significant event that I can think of to trigger... happened all of a sudden.

I really don't want to go back to my old

E61 or move to a E71 .. but I'm on and off planes a lot for business and this boot time is .. frustrating.

The Answer
If reformatting the device without restoring a backup does not help, you most likely have to try to reflash the firmware. This will also update the firmware to the latest version, and you will loose the Blackberry Connect client. If that also does not help, it could be something hardware related which a Nokia service centre would have to take a look at.

Memory structure of Series 60 smartphones

There are several different types of memory found in Series 60 smartphones

Disk C - Flash memory based storage ("disk") memory. This disk is used for storing user data, files and applications. Disk C: is a Flash disk, which means that it preserves its contents even when the power is off or the battery is removed. Old S60 phones like the 7650 or 3650 only had about 4 MB C: drive. New phones like the N90 have almost 30 MB of internal storage available for the user. This memory also stores your settings, important system data files, Contacts and Calendar databases and more.

Disk D - RAM-disk (size depends on phone: about 400 kilobytes in older phones, about 1,8 MB in newer phones like 6630, 6680 or N90). This disk is created in DRAM memory, which means it is volatile. It is meant for internal system use and not to be used by the phone user. Some applications temporarily store their data on this disk, which makes them work faster (DRAM memory is much faster than Flash). It is useless to save any user data on D: because all contents of this disk are lost when you switch the phone off or reboot the system.

Disk E - memory card. Memory cards (in MMC or SD format) can be used to expand the built in storage memory (disk C:). On memory cards, users can install applications and store different kinds of data (e.g. music, videos, documents, etc). Memory cards use Flash memory, which means that they preserve their contents even if the phone is turned off or the card is removed.

Disk Z - read only Flash memory containing the Symbian operating system. Contents of Z: drive cannot be modified by the user as this memory area is protected and read only. Firmware upgrade can only be made by authorized service centres using special Flash programming devices and Nokia service software called Phoenix.

Operating memory (RAM) - this memory is for program execution. It is not visible as a "disk" or drive letter like C: or Z: and it is not directly available to the user. Think of it as of RAM memory of your desktop computer: you don't save any files or data in it, it is only used by the system and applications. Of course, the more of it the better as it lets you execute more advanced programs or run more applications at the same time. Old Symbian OS phones like 7650 or 3650 only had 8 MB RAM of which about 3,5 MB was free. Newer phones like e.g. 6630 or 6680 have 16 MB RAM of which about 8 MB is free. The newest NSeries smartphones like the N90 have 48 MB RAM of which about 21 MB is free!

Confuse about File Manager

When I look at my phone with a file manager, I can see four drives called C:, D:, E: and Z: respectively. From my Psion days, I know that Z: is the ROM. E: is the memory card (this used to be D: on the Psion). On the Psion, C: was the RAM where files were stored and programs executed. I immagine that on the phone C: is the internal flash memory where files are stored. D: is labelled as RAM and is only about 1.8 megabytes in size. Is that where programs are executed? Does it act as a temporary store for things looaded from C: (some sort of cache you might say)?

The Answer
The D-drive is, indeed, a RAM disk that created automatically by Symbian/S60. Probably some built-in applications use it for temporary, fast file storage.

The touch sensitive screen (single-touch) provides tactile feedback using vibra. Touch the screen or move a slider and you will not only hear and see but also feel its reaction. It works all the time, unless you set a profile to not use it. The tactile feedback vibration works towards the screen, you can feel it as a 'click'. There are three levels of feedback and other simpler feedback mechanisms (like turning the phone over to stop it ringing). BBC for S60 Live!

It seems that the BBC's version of iPlayer for S60 has gone live, download it here. It has been implemented as a web runtime widget that kicks off streaming in RealPlayer. And it's also, naturally, a bit fussy about which devices it installs on. It seems happy with the N78, N95 and N96, obviously, other success stories welcome. Screenshots and more comments below...

The iPlayer application / widget opens a mobile version of the main iPlayer site. A number of shows are featured on the front page or you can browse for shows via channel or category. There's also a search function for tracking down shows by name.

Shows are streamed to Real Player (you may need to set the access point for the Real player application). Shows are shown in a letter box format as the aspect ratio of the phone's screen is different to that of the the video stream.

You can stream shows over WiFi or over a strong 3G connection.

The other caveat is that the use of RealPlayer streaming means that it won't work for some over Wi-Fi, depending on firewall and router settings.

Please also note that iPlayer will only work in the UK.

How to write and edit documents on the go — without a laptop in sight

As smart phones and personal digital assistants become more like little computers, they have begun to compete with laptops as portable digital workstations. For short or light-duty business trips, you can now leave the laptop at home and rely instead on a smart phone with a keyboard, such as a BlackBerry phone from Research in Motion, a Treo from Palm or a keyboard-equipped iPAQ from Hewlett-Packard. These devices can place and receive phone calls, send and receive e-mail, surf the Web in a basic fashion, and maintain your calendar and contacts list, synchronized with your computer. They can even play music and videos, display your photos, and just like your laptop, they’ll let you play solitaire.

But what about the other major function of a laptop-viewing and editing Microsoft Office documents? Well, it turns out you can do that, too, on these devices, at least to a point. Currently, you can read Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, as well as Adobe PDF files, on certain handhelds; you can even edit them and synchronize the changes back to a PC.

Here’s a look at how that’s possible, on the three most popular types of smart phones and PDAs in the U.S.: those powered by the Palm operating system, those powered by the Windows Mobile operating system (formerly known as Pocket PC), and the BlackBerry, which uses both hardware and software from RIM.

First, make sure your device has lots of storage capacity, either in internal memory or on a removable memory card, if your device can accept them. (The Treo, the iPAQ and most other devices running Windows Mobile software can; BlackBerry models cannot.) You will need that room to store your Office documents.

Second, I strongly advise those wanting to edit documents to buy a phone or PDA with a full keyboard, rather than one that relies solely on handwriting recognition or a phone keypad. The software for viewing and editing documents does work on devices without a keyboard, but unless you just want to read documents, the process is painful on these models.

You might think that the devices running Windows Mobile software would do the best job of handling Microsoft Office documents because both systems are made by Microsoft. Or you might imagine the BlackBerry was tops at this task because it is bought mostly by corporate computer departments, where Microsoft Office is the application software of choice. But in fact, the best devices for viewing and editing Office documents are those using the Palm operating system, such as the Palm Treo 650. That’s because of a helpful third-party program, Documents to Go, from DataViz, which is packaged with many Palm devices, including the Treo.

Next best are the Microsoft-powered phones and hand-helds, which come with built-in mobile versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Bringing up the rear is the BlackBerry, which can display Word, Excel and PowerPoint files when sent as e-mail attachments, but doesn’t let you edit
or synchronize them with a PC.

Palm OS devices. The best smart phone on the market is the Treo 650, produced by Palm and powered by the Palm operating system, which is made by a separate company called PalmSource. While the Palm software lacks the built-in capability to read or edit Office documents, the Treo comes bundled with Documents to Go, which can import and open Microsoft files in their native formats without downsizing them to some special “pocket” version. It also allows you to edit, or even create, these types of documents and synchronize your changes with versions on your PC.

You can get the documents into your Treo or other Palm device either by receiving them as e-mail attachments or via synchronization with your PC. Documents to Go includes a computer program that performs this document synchronization; I use it often on my Treo 650. It displays documents in their actual fonts, including colors and attributes like underlining, bold and italics. Indents and spacing are also preserved. The Treo 650 doesn’t support different font sizes, and it doesn’t include a spell checker. Documents can be opened from, or stored to, either the device’s internal memory or a memory card. You can also zoom the screen to show more or less of the document, especially important with spreadsheets, which often sprawl across the page and can be hard to read when resized to fit entirely on the small screen. PowerPoint files can be edited and synchronized only if you are using a Windows PC, though they can be viewed if you are using a Macintosh.

In my tests over the years, Documents to Go performed flawlessly, better than the built-in mobile Office programs on Windows-powered handhelds. In addition to being bundled with the Treo and some other Palm devices, Documents to Go is available for independent purchase, in several versions, for $30 to $90, depending on features. There are also versions for smart phones that use the Symbian operating system, including models from Nokia and Sony Ericsson. Windows Mobile devices. There are two kinds of devices powered by Microsoft’s Windows Mobile software. Some are confusingly named “smart phones,” though they generally lack keyboards and some key software capabilities, including the ability to edit Office documents. Others are full-featured handhelds, including some with keyboards, such as several of HP’s iPAQ models, the new Samsung i730 phone and the very latest and greatest Windows Mobile device, the Treo 700w.

The new Treo is the first device built by Palm to eschew the Palm operating system for Windows software. While it’s mainly aimed at the corporate market and, in my view, isn’t as good as the Treo 650, the 700w is probably the best Windows Mobile device. On the new Treo and others, you can read, edit and create Word and Excel files, and synchronize them with your PC. You can view PowerPoint files, but not edit or create them.

As with the Treo 650, you can get these documents into your device either by receiving them as email attachments or by copying them from a PC.

While the mobile Office programs on the Windows devices work okay, they aren’t quite as good as Documents to Go, in my experience. For instance, in a recent test I opened a simple Word document on two Treosa 650 running the Palm OS and Documents to Go, and a 700w running Windows Mobile and its built-in Office Mobile programs. Documents to Go opened the program perfectly in its Times New Roman font and sized it so the words were distinct, and the formatting was preserved. The Word Mobile program in Windows Mobile displayed the document in a different font and in a size that screwed up the formatting. And while Documents to Go allows you to create and edit PowerPoint files, Windows Mobile doesn’t.

BlackBerry. The BlackBerry can view Office documents when received as e-mail attachments, but the function is pretty primitive. You can’t directly import documents or synchronize them with a computer. And you can’t create or edit them, even though you have a full keyboard at your disposal.

There is a third-party program for the BlackBerry that claims to allow editing, creating and synchronizing of Word and Excel documents, but not PowerPoint files. It’s called eOffice, made by a company called DynoPlex, and it’s available in versions ranging from $120 to $200 at www.dynoplex.com [http://www.dynoplex.com].

I wouldn’t want to write a long report on a Treo. But in a pinch, I could have written this column on one. And editing a document like this is a breeze. So you really can leave that laptop at home, at least some of the time.

If you want to restore your Series 60 phone back to factory state, ie. remove all applications, settings, user files and set all options to default, enter the following code:

on the standby screen. This will completely format your smartphone. The device will reboot and it will be in a state you bought it.

Formatting storage memory takes some time. Do not touch anything during the process! It is recommended to only do it with fully charged battery and your phone connected to a charger to ensure that your battery doesn't run out of juice in the middle of formatting.

Files on Ovi now available in beta

Files on Ovi, which provides access to files on remote computers, is the latest Ovi service and is now available in beta form. After installing a software 'connector' on your PC you can then access files on your computer from any web enabled device (e.g. another PC or your phone). Files on Ovi is the results of last year's acquisition of Avevnu by Nokia.

Files on Ovi acts as a bridge allowing you to access files on your own PC from any remote device. Access is through the Files on Ovi website which displays a file and folder structure similar to Windows Explorer (see screenshots below). You can preview certain file types before downloading them (Word, Excel, PDF, images). You can also upload files from the remote device to your PC (e.g. upload a document from your phone which means it will be sitting in your My Documents folder when you return to your PC).

A key feature of Files on Ovi is the ability to access files even if the host PC is switched off. In order to do this files or folders must be marked as 'anytime files' (you do this on the website), the connector software will then upload these files from the host PC to be stored in the cloud (Files on Ovi server). As you add, update or remove files on the host PC they will be automatically synced up to the cloud. Each Files on Ovi subscription comes with 10GB of storage.

Anytime files can thus be accessed even if the your PC is switched off. If you upload files from a remote device when your PC is switched off they will be downloaded to the host PC the next time it is switched on.

The ability to share files and folder with others is another important feature. You can opt to share a file or folder for a given length of time by sending a sharing message, by email, to anyone you like. You can, optionally, revoke sharing privileges at any time.

On a mobile device most operations take place on the page for each file / folder:

Note the links at the bottom for sending (to others), downloading and adding to anytime files. You can also see how the image has been resized (previewed) to give the optimium display on the mobile device.

Files on Ovi is the first Ovi service to use the new unified Nokia / Ovi login (account.nokia.com). It may be worth signing up for an account now to ensure you get the username you want.

Files on Ovi is currently in Beta. In the future the anytime files function will be a premium service for which you will have to pay a fee. Using the service using only the connector shoudl remina free (if the Avvenu model continues to apply). However the anytime file functionality is where the most value is; for the time being you can sign up and receive a 90 day trial.

You can also access Files on Ovi from a PC browser. This more cloesly replicates the experience of using a file manager on a PC.

Although branded under to Ovi name Files on Ovi, like Share on Ovi, can be used on a wide variety of devices. There's currently no on-board client software for viewing and downloading files - all you need is access to a web browser - as such it should run on most recent phones.

Currently the PC component (the connector software) in Windows only, but Nokia intend to extend this to other platforms in the future.

I've connected to a USB port on the back of the PC, as suggested in an earlier post, but no joy. I get "Software Update Failed" just before it starts to download, after acknowledging that "all data will be removed."

I did not format the phone. I'd prefer not to do this unless someone has found this to be necessary (or helpful for this type of problem), as I would have a lot of reloading to do. If I had re-formatted every time I've tried to update, I'd be even more upset.
